Also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis, this severe gum infection leads to everything from bad breath to severe gum recession.
So how can you know whether or not you have an active gum infection? Our dentist in MS DENTAL wants you to be on the lookout for some of these most common symptoms:
- Gums That Bleed — If your gums bleed when you’re brushing or flossing, it is not normal.
- Bad Breath — Halitosis is a common red flag for bacterial infections deep below the gums.
- “Long” Teeth — As gums pull away from your teeth, they recede and leave teeth looking longer than before.
- Visible Tartar Buildup or Discoloration — Tartar harbors bacteria that causes gum disease. Check for signs of buildup behind your lower front teeth. It won’t come off with a toothbrush or floss.
- Food Getting Stuck Between Teeth — When gums detach from the tooth, it allows food to build up and get stuck in the “pockets” around and between your teeth.
- Tooth Sensitivity — Exposed root surfaces are especially tender to temperature changes. If you feel a “jolt” of pain in a specific area, it might be a side-effect of gum recession.
